How We Created a Home that Feels Like an Exhale

...and how you can too.

ree

There was a time when my home felt like a never-ending to-do list. Shoes in the hallway (mine - Andy is a delight). A laundry basket bursting at the seams (again, ahem). A diffuser with stale water from three days ago. No matter how much I cleaned, I never really exhaled.

The turning point came when I realised my nervous system wasn’t just reacting to what was in my body — but also to what was around it.

A healing home isn't a Pinterest-perfect space. It’s not about matching cushions and spotless counters, although that is kinda cute. It’s about creating an environment where your body finally says, “I’m safe.”

Here’s what helped me get there:

1. I Reduced the Noise

No, not silence — but overstimulation was costing me energy I didn’t know I was spending. I started dimming lights after 7pm, switching to gentle music, and carving out one screen-free space in the house.

2. I Used Scent Intentionally

Smell is the fastest way to signal “safe” to the brain. Lavender and Frankincense / Peppermint & Cedarwood in the diffuser when I need grounding. Lemon and Peppermint to energise a slow afternoon. These little rituals rewired my relationship with my space.

3. I Decluttered Where It Mattered

Not the whole house — just the places that made me feel anxious every time I looked at them. One drawer. The kitchen worktop. The bookshelf (still working on my 1/3 of the kitchen table = my office...)

4. I Let “Good Enough” Be Enough

There’s a false perception that your home has to look a certain way to be healing. That’s not true. Some days there are crumbs on the floor, and my office is on overdrive — but the diffuser’s on, the energy is kind, and the space still feels safe.

Creating a healing home is a process. And if your home doesn’t feel like an exhale yet — you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just not done yet.

It's amazing what one diffuser + pure essential oils can do.
