Low-Tox Habits that Actually Stuck

...and why that mattered.
You know what, as a homeopath I actually thought I was already living a low-tox lifestyle. I'm not even kidding. I used lemons and vinegar now and then and wouldn't own a microwave (never have - never will actually). But when Andy got his cancer diagnosis I looked at my products and realised I had been fooling myself.
I did stop and wonder if chemicals had contributed somehow to his diagnosis, but how would we ever know? And what good does thinking about that do anyway.
So I did something no-one should EVER do..
I went low-tox overnight. It was chaotic, expensive and a LOT to learn but I wanted to do everything I could for his fragile immune system as fast as possible. Not everything stuck at once, but the majority did. And now? They are habits I don’t even think about — ones that genuinely shifted our health and home.
If you’ve felt overwhelmed by the idea of “low-tox living,” I know what that feels like and now I teach people how to do it slowly, peacefully and economically. Here’s permission to ignore the trends and just start with what feels doable.

🌱 Swapping Our All-Purpose Cleaner
I was skeptical - can a low-tox cleaner ACTUALLY clean? Yes, and it easily cleans raw meat residue too. The first time I used Thieves cleaner I accidentally sprayed it on myself and freaked out, then I realised I didn't have to panic and my kitchen didn’t smell like chemicals. It actually worked. And it smelled like spicy cinnamon. It’s not about perfection — it’s about less headache and less hormone disruption. Easy win.
🌱 Replacing Plastic Containers with Glass
No more tomato-stained tubs and mystery lids. Clingfilm swapped for beeswax wraps. You don’t need a full pantry makeover — just switch one at a time.
🌱 Adding Oils to My Laundry
Wool dryer balls with 3 drops of Lavender or Purification (or Geranium if you're fancy). Fresh clothes, no fake scents, no itchy skin. Plus, I feel weirdly smug every time I do it. In summer, I add the oils to my detergent (which is also low-tox) and line dry when possible.
🌱 A Room Mist I Actually Use
In a 500ml glass spray bottle, add 10-15 drops of essential oils and lightly mist each room (or MORE if you're boogie and use within 2 weeks / use a stabiliser). If I am completely honest, Andy makes this and he is the one that sprays it. But I enjoy it by association!
Why These Changes Stuck:
They were quick.
They didn’t need a full lifestyle overhaul.
They made life feel better, not harder.
I only need a starter kit and a couple of products to make a huge shift.
You don’t need to do everything. You just need to do one thing and KEEP GOING.
And that’s how low-tox actually sticks.
